The Patrol Division is considered the “most visible section” of any law enforcement agency; the Clayton Police Department is no different. The Patrol Division operates three shifts, which serve a population of 3000 seven days a week, 365 days a year. The Patrol Division is the primary responder to all calls for service and it is our primary goal to provide the most prompt and professional response possible. The Clayton Police Department responded to nearly 4,236 calls for service in 2011. Officers handled a variety of calls ranging from reports of minor vandalism to felony investigations.
Clayton officers possess certifications in areas such as field training officer, bomb technicians, crime scene management, firearms instructor, Ir 8000 key operators, highway narcotic interdiction, accident reconstruction, commercial motor vehicle inspections, emergency management, field sobriety test instructor, Clandestine meth labs. Several officers are also certified as general police instructors.
Our Investigation section is staffed with a full time field Investigator, the Investigator responds to any felony crime scene and maintains a working relationship with other law enforcement agencys and the District attorneys office. All felony cases are reviewed by the Investigator for further action and or closure.
The specialized response team consists of Clayton and Union county officers. These officers are available 24 hours per day and can respond to any situation requiring advanced weapons and tactics.
The communications section is staffed with 5 state certified communications equipment operators. The center is the answering/dispatch point for all emergency response within Union county. The communications section is supervised by the Office Manager who is also the agency T.A.C.
The records/evidence section is staffed with a full time Office Manager. All documentation is fowarded to the records section and processed. All evidence is processed and maintained by the Office Manager.
The community service officer is tasked with performing code enforcement , animal control and prisoner transport duties. This program ensures that home and business owners maintain their propertys, according to Town ordinances in order to ensure that Clayton remains a clean and prosperous main street community.
Correctional services for persons arrested are provided at the Town of Claytons 625 bed detention facility. The facility was opened in July of 2008 and is operated by GEO correctional companies . Persons arrested within Union county are housed at the facility awaiting court appearences, the detention facility also houses medium security inmates for the state of New Mexico through a contractual agreement.
